Fielding - Shortstop

Q43 Errors

I have had a big problem throwing the ball to first base. My catching is way above average and my arm strength is very poor. I was a pitcher from March to August, and after that I was hit with a line drive in my leg and I never pitched again, so I began playing shortstop and the problem kept growing and in 148 Games played I was hitting .360 with 34 HR, 102 RBI, 42 SB, 3 CS, and the bad part was I had 43 Errors.

AI frankly am surprised you got to stay at shortstop with those fielding numbers. )I assume the errors were throwing errors not glove errors.) But I can see why they wanted you at bat and on the basepath! Also with a weak arm how were you ever a pitcher?
I honestly don't think it can be simply an arm strength problem. You have the mechanics to hit well, but you need to think about a number of fielding factors - from position, movement to the ball, etc.
Is it possible you are now afraid of the ball? Afraid of being hit by the batted ball, or afraid of what you will do with the ball once you have it?
First, I would think about moving to second base if the arm doesn't improve.
There are other factors - the way you transfer the ball to throwing hand, the foot steps. Most of this is covered somewhere on WebBall. But I would suggest you ask your coach about playing left field - the legs and glove are neded there but the arm isn't as critical.

QFront Corner of the Bag

Runner on first attempting to steal. Situation calls for the short stop to cover second. How should he stand? What is the proper foot work in relationship to the bag/runner/throw so he can make the play?

AHe should come to the front corner of the bag (closest to home) so his glove can sweep down and cover the leading edge (closest to first) - making sure the back of the glove is to runner so the ball is wedged between bag and cleat. He could also try to come behind the bag and pull his hand down on the leading edge - okay except ball is exposed for greater distance to bag - greater risk of being knocked away.

QInfielder Velocity

I'm a 14 year old Shortstop. I can reach from SS to 1B with out a problem...m
y problem is how fast I can throw it there. Is there any way I can increase my
arm strength through things such as elastics or something... or would just long
toss help?

AYes, long toss helps. Yes tubing helps. And so does technique. Is the real
problem your velocity or how quickly and efficiently you field, transfer and
throw? If you can be better at fielding with the glove out front and deflecting
the ball from palm (not pocket) to throwing hand - with a good four seam grip
then that can reduce your overall times and can compensate for the tough throws
when arm strength alone is not enough.

QThrows to Teammates

If you're shortstop and the 1st basemen can't catch too well how should you throw it?

AInteresting question. I would have one of my best gloves at first, so that seems like an odd position to have less than one of the best player on your team, but that's a coaching decision. The only way to work with any teammate who isn't a good receiver is to be a better thrower yourself. Throw a straight 4-seam fastball, with little movement, right to the chest. The mistake some might make is thinking that if they can't catch well then you should throw easier. But the lob ball, powder puff, or floater, is way more likely to move or fall out of the glove. Throw them the heat that will stick. (If I had a chance to talk to the coach in this situation, I'd want to hear his side of it - is the problem all at 1st or does he have the wrong guy at Short? This is one of those instances where I'd want to look at fielding percentages to make sure what I think I see in my players is supported by the numbers.)
